With the anticipated growth in importance of Wi-Fi as a means of offloading data traffic from overburdened cellular networks, the means of locating and automatically connecting to suitable hotspots is becoming a priority. Now WeFi, a company that has already created a database of over 56 million Wi-Fi access points worldwide, has launched an updated version of its free connection software for PC and Android mobile phones. The software locates and categorises available Wi-Fi hotspots, with user-friendly mapping of all access points relative to a specific street address.

In a move that appears to strengthen the case for supporters of Wi-Fi as a means of offloading the traffic from hard-pressed 3G networks, Ruckus Wireless has today introduced an end-to-end managed, wireless broadband access (WBA) solution based on IEEE 802.11n, which it says will give service providers a cost-effective, expandable model for offering broadband data services in developing urban environments. The Ruckus WBA solution includes outdoor mesh access points (AP), customer premises equipment (CPE), a new line of smart Wi-Fi backhaul systems and system-wide remote management.

Mimix Broadband has introduced a 27 - 34 GHz QFN packaged receiver with a noise figure of 2.5dB and 13dB conversion gain, suitable for point-to-point (PTP) microwave radio, LMDS, SatCom and VSAT applications. The XR1019-QH receiver integrates an LNA, image reject mixer and LO buffer amplifier, and is housed in a fully moulded 4 x 4mm QFN package, making the device easy to install and handle in volume applications.
