People like me and maybe you who knew the Internet even before this chap in Geneva invented the World Wide Web know what it’s content always was supposed to be: free, at least free of cost. This seems to change (slowly), but offers like a freely downloadable Ethernet platform indicates that this school of thought is not completely fighting a losing battle.
A fully functional connectivity solution for EtherNet/IP adapters can be downloaded from the Innovasic website after registration. It has been pre-tested for EtherNet/IP conformance and includes electronic schematics, bill of materials, and layout files, as well as all necessary software, stacks, and development environment. The »RapID« platform is not a demo version but intended for risk-free, no cost evaluation which can be performed on hardware via the Internet or directly.

»Innovasic’s RapID Platform provides quick and easy EtherNet/IP connectivity,« said Keith Prettyjohns, Innovasic’s CEO. »Engineers can download the entire platform, free of charge for evaluation. A one-time license fee applies only if the platform is used in production,« he added.
The solution is centered on Innovasic’s communication controller »fido« which handles all EtherNet/IP traffic. The RapID platform can be used as a network processor alongside any host microcontroller. It may also be used as a standalone solution with the customer’s application running directly on RapID. All software is royalty-free. The Ethernet physical interface includes protection circuitry, bicolor LEDs, and magnetics integrated in the connector. According to Innovasic, the platform achieves an EtherNet/IP packet interval (RPI) of 1 ms and supports the full CIP (Control and Information protocol) specification including Identity, Message Route, Assembly, Connection Manager, Ethernet Link, and TCP/IP Objects.
