Digi-Key has ceased publishing its printed catalogue with immediate effect. Products are now available only online.
The Thief River Falls-based company is citing environmental responsibility and its strategy to shift to being a totally integrated global electronics distributor for the initiative.
Additionally, Digi-Key will produce online-only versions of TechZone Magazine beginning with the June 2011 Lighting Solutions issue. Customers will be able to access both the product catalogue and the magazines as downloadable PDFs and interactively online. TechZone Magazine is also mobile-enabled for users with an iPhone, iPod, iPad or Android-compatible mobile device. Both the Digi-Key interactive and PDF catalogues will be mobile-enabled in the future.
“By producing interactive and PDF catalogues and magazines, Digi-Key will significantly reduce its impact on the environment while providing customers with efficient, virtual access to Digi-Key’s expansive product offerings,” said Mark Larson (pictured), Digi-Key's President and Chief Operating Officer. “Our portfolio of websites and online resources will give our customers greater access to Digi-Key’s in-stock products, while providing unparalleled information about real-time pricing, lead-times and product specifications, as well as videos, reference designs, custom editorial content and more.”
Other Digi-Key online offerings include: a Bill of Materials (BOM) Manager for customised order assemblyand packaging, product training modules, PurchasingPro which delivers updates on prices, lead-times and market conditions and a reference design library.
Well it was extremely large & probably responsible for many an injury to the world's Postmen & Women!
It also received a lot of negative Tweets along the way due to it's size
The remaining High-Service (Catalogue) distributors have recommitted to continuing with print alongside e-Commerce so will Digi-Key rue the day I wonder?
