After 40 years in the business you might have expected Tony Frere (pictured) to opt for a relaxed retirement when he amicably resigned from the post of managing director at Nu Horizons UK. Obviously not as he has rejoined the fray as a non executive director of UK-based distributor Solid State Supplies.
Frere has seen action on both sides of the distribution fence. He was chief buyer for Lexor Electronics before joining distributor ESD. After a stint as sales director at Vanderhoff Communications, he and two others founded DT Electronics in 1988. They built a respected niche technology company up to £18m sales before the company was acquired by Nu Horizons in 2006.
Frere hinted he might be back, and Gary Marsh chief executive officer of Solid State Supplies is pleased to see him. ""His expertise will enable us to develop our strategy as we aim to become the
Frere's move comes just days after another UK distribution industry veteran Martin Kent emerged as the new president and chief executive officer of, yup, Nu Horizons. Kent was chief executive officer of Abacus Group until its acquisition by Avnet last year.
This writer thought Kent would retire and pursue his interests in horse racing, and plenty of other sports, including his key role as wicketkeeper for Wonersh Cricket Club in Surrey.
He will now decamp across the Atlantic to Nu Horizons' Melville, New York headquarters. I don't think Melville has a cricket team, though it does boast a decent golf club.
