At the risk of starting a stampede of distributors to the doors of every LED supplier in the whole, wide world, there is at least some heartening news to be had in the electronic components sector.
As the semiconductor market continues its stunning decline through this year, the LED market will buck the trend and grow 2.9 per cent this year according to market research from iSuppli.
Though this is down on the 10.8 per cent achieved in 2008, it represents the one bright spot in a market suffering a power cut.
It is the LCD TV market which is pushing this momentum. iSuppli reckons makers of these TVS will consume $163m worth of LEDs which is an increase of221.9 per cent from the $51m they spent in 2008. And, hold on to your hat, iSuppli estimates that by 2012 LCD TV makers will be spending $1.4bn on LEDs.
"One positive message was issued by LCD TV makers at the Consumer Electronics Show: LED backlighting and thinner form factors represent the future of the market," said Riddhi Patel, iSuppli's principal analyst for the television industry.
Other potential applications picked out by iSuppli include backlighting for desktop monitors and notebook PC LCD displays. the company thinks LEDs also have strong growth potential as replacements for light bulbs in general illumination applications.
