Some very smart software is now being made available by Altium through its global distributor partner Digi-Key.
It has introduced live links from its Designer product development system to the databases of component suppliers. It means engineers can search online supplier databases for information on components including cost and availability. This information can then be incorporated into the design and decision making process. The decision to link with Digi-Key extends the original partnership agreement between the two companies signed in September this year.
Commented Nic Martin, Altium's chief executive officer, "Being able to link directly into a components database as extensive as that of DigiKey lets designers make smarter decisions about the components they use in a design. They will no longer be blindsided by a component becoming unavailable half way through a project. Whenever they open their design they get an accurate picture of what is available and at what cost even if things have changed within an hour or so."
"The engineers don't have to wait find out and neither do their managers," he added.
"That electronics designers can now source their components directly from within a design solution and retain that information live is a real breakthrough," said Mark Larson, president and chief operating officer of Digi-Key.
