Japan has long been a tough market for western distributors. A little by little approach has gained a foothold, but not much more.
Now Avnet has strengthened its hand by acquiring Nippon Denso Industry, a Tokyo-based design in distributor. The company which was established over 50 years ago works off a focused, limited line card consisting of complex semiconductors and sub-system level solutions. Avnet expects to close the sale by December 29, 2008.
Yukio Kawabata the current president stays on and becomes a member of Avnet EM Japan's management team. NDI has five sales offices in Japan and two sales offices based in Hong Kong and Singapore as well as a subsidiary in Shanghai. NDI revenues are $170m.
Tom McCartney, president of Avnet EMJapan commented, "NDI shares our core strategy of offering design-in distribution with exceptional service. The acquisition will add new suppliers."
