There is a very nostalgic tinge to the news just announced that Avnet Memec is to distribute Zilog's Encore 32 Series microcontroller.
Those with long memories, make that very long, will know that Zilog is almost where it all began for Memec over 35 years ago. The Harris Semiconductor line actually kicked off Memec. Zilog was the number two franchise snapped up by Memec founder Dick Skipworth on one of his early trips to Silicon Valley, and it garnered more coverage as Memec was bringing the Z8 microprocessor to the UK market.
The launch venue was the US Trade Centre just off Langham Place, London, bang opposite the BBC. Every year the US Embassy's trade department staged an electronics show for up and coming north American companies. The Memec/Zilog stand became the focus of the show as Dick Skipworth and Ed Sturmer explained and demonstrated the product to all and sundry.
So present day Avnet Memecites - no pressure, but you have something to live up to.
