Future Electronics is making a 40 million Euro investment in a brand new European electronics distribution centre to be located in Leipzig.
"We bought the land, the building is now being constructed and facilitation will begin in January 2009," said Martin Bielesch, deputy managing director of Future Electronics EMEA.
The centre will be fully automated. "The contractor undertaking the automation project will move in on January 2 and hand over to us in December," Bielesch added. "We will start to ramp up over the next six months and transfer operations from the present centre in Hayes, UK."
The project is being supported by the local government in Lower Saxony and will create 140 jobs.
The new centre will be a mirror image of Future's recently completed US distribution centre in Memphis, Tennessee.
Leipzig was chosen ahead of eight European locations.
"We had a great reception from the local people, both the government and companies, such as BMW which has a big facility there," said Bielesch.
He continued,"It has excellent proximity to our European customer base, DHL has located its European hub there, and we have financial support from the local government."
