Interesting chat yesterday with Phil Gee, Vice President for European sales at Nu Horizons. It's two years since the company started its European push with the acquisition of UK-based DT Electronics.
Gee was very chipper about progress so far. The company has since established a business in Germany, thus giving it a presence in the two major European market places. You might think France and/or Italy would be the next moves. I would and I'd be wrong, because Nu Horizons is making a big play in the burgeoning Eastern Europe electronics markets. It's no secret these countries got started by attracting inward investment from companies keen to lower manufacturing costs. Electronic manufacturing services (EMS) companies were enthusiastic immigrants and they have built a strong electronics base out East. So Gee has identified those companies as his initial customers.
He's already got Nu Horizons ticking over very nicely thank you in Poland and the Czech Republic and today - yes folks you read it here first - he has appointed a sales manager, Janos Boszormenyi, as sales manager for Romania and Hungary. It looks like the new recruit has good contacts with EMS companies in these countries. But they are not the be-all and end-all. Gee's smart strategy is to establish good revenue streams and the EMS businesses will play key roles in that ambition. Once up and running he will start to infiltrate Nu Horizons technical expertise and support to build new customer bases among the design houses and SME manufacturers which are sprouting up in countries we once associated more with mining and heavy industries.
There will be more on this in a special feature which will be published in the Electronica supplement for EDN Europe magazine. I'd better not use all the material or an irate editor will be round to remonstrate or worse. Hang on I can hear a car on the drive, time to go!
