It is generally the rule that being head of an acquired company is not a good place to be. Once the acquisition dust has settled, said boss usually hits the road to the vacancies page of the local industry newspaper or signs up with a head hunter company.
So it is pleasing to note two recent exceptions to this rule. First up is Alan Jermyn who was joint managing director at the passive components distributor C&CD when it was acquired by Abacus in 2000. C&CD was merged with Micromark, another Abacus subsidiary and Jermyn took the role of marketing director. From there on it has been onward and upward. He was named managing director of Micromark and Abacus Deltron as well as general manager of two of Abacus's own brand businesses - Dubilier and Eledis.
Now he has stepped up again to a newly created role as general manager of Abacus ECD (Electronic Component Distribution) UK which gives him responsibility for the activities in the UK of Abacus, Micromark and Abacus Deltron.
Earlier this month I reported that Chris Shipway who headed Azzurri Electronics in the UK when it was acquired by Avnet had been appointed country director UK for Avnet Memec.
These guys may be the exception rather than the rule, but it's heartening to see companies not jettisoning talent under their noses.
