IAA 2011: An extra eye on the road

One of the hottest among the hot topics at IAA 2011 - Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung - in Frankfurt is safety. Safety for driver and passengers but also for pedestrians and all the other traffic on the road.

ADAS is short for Advanced Driver Assistance System - a generic term for technologies that actively support the driver at avoiding accidents. A special kind of ADAS technology has been introduced at IAA by Mobileye.

In the focus of the company’s presentation stood the ‘Intelligent High-Beam Control’ (IHC), which automatically turns the high beam on and off. IHC adjusts the high beam in a timely manner, so that oncoming or preceding vehicles are not inconvenienced. Another interesting technique is the Speed Limit Indication (SLI). Based on a proprietary artificial vision system, Mobileye’s SLI recognizes speed limit and supplementary signs, »reads« the speed limit and communicates it via a special CAN channel for Telematics and third-party integrators.
The system C2-270 includes a camera located on the front windshield inside the vehicle. It utilizes Mobileye’s vehicle, lane and pedestrian detection technologies to measure the distance to vehicles, lane markings and pedestrians, alerting the driver. A display (EyeWatch) allows for vehicle detection indication, gauge for headway monitoring and color coded alerts for all warnings.
These new features, together with the company’s Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Headway Monitoring and Warning and Pedestrian Collision form a set of safety applications for aftermarket, integrated in the C2-Series. Isaac Litman, CEO at Mobileye Products, promises: »Our roadmap includes additional innovative technologies that are about to revolutionize the ADAS industry in the beginning of 2012«.
