For a better positioning and to solidify growth in embedded systems, the German Berner & Mattner Systemtechnik, is joining the French Assystem Group. The agreement stipulates that Berner & Mattner is being integrated into the Assystem Group as an independent unit and without any change in either staff or organization.
Both companies affirm that this acquisition is a win-win-situation, since both are now able to strengthen their position in electronic and IT embedded systems with a revenue in the range of 100 Mio. € just in this segment, is Hans Berner, CEO and founder, convinced. The two companies may benefit from strong complementary customer portfolios that can give Assystem a key edge in the aerospace, automotive, defence and transportation industries in Europe, affirms Ulrich Feik, CEO of Assystem in Germany.

According to the report of POTIER "Briques Génériques du Logiciel Embarqué“ (October 2010) which was commissioned by the French Ministry of Digital Economy, the market for electronic and IT embedded systems has grown by 7% every year since 2002 and should keep growing faster. In this engineering market segment, France and Germany are top global players capitalizing on their leadership in key industries such as Aerospace and Automotive. Today, a third of the total cost of an aircraft is related to embedded systems, while 20% of the cost of a car comes from their design and implementation.

The German company Berner & Mattner specialises in the specification, development and testing of embedded electronic systems, totalling revenues of 28 Mio. € in 2010. Needless to say that Hans Berner sees in the acquisition a “new dimension” to the business he founded 30 years ago: “With the growth prospects in embedded systems in Germany and worldwide, I believe it is the right time to benefit from the scale and reputation of an international company whose engineering skills are valued by leading market players.”

Founded in 1979 by Hans Berner and Adolf Mattner, the company has achieved an average growth of 25% over the past four years and enjoys a solid reputation on the market. Today, the company has 286 employees, is headquartered in Munich and has offices in Cologne, Hamburg, Berlin, Stuttgart, Ingolstadt, Wolfsburg and Vienna (Austria). Regarded as a niche player, Berner & Mattner has developed longstanding relationships with leading European manufacturers mostly in the automotive and transportation markets, such as Daimler, BMW, Bombardier and Siemens. Furthermore, the company has been named for the prestigious award “Bavaria’s best 50 for 2009”.
Through the integration of Berner & Mattner, the stock-listed Assystem Group with more than 8,500 employees throughout the world will increase its number of employees to 1,100 in Germany, enhances its presence in that market and gains crucial competitive edges in the fields of aerospace, automotive, defence and transportation in Europe. In Germany, Assystem employs more than 800 people in three main business areas: Assystem Aerospace Germany, Atena Engineering and Silver Atena Electronic Systems Engineering.
Continuity of personnel
Berner & Mattner’s management team remains in position in order to successfully continue running the company and to contribute to the building up of a stronger Assystem group in Germany. “We are pleased to welcome the team of Berner & Mattner within Assystem. Their engineering excellence and highly valued skills will enhance our offering towards our customers,” adds Ulrich Feik, CEO of Assystem in Germany.
This acquisition will be completed in the days to come, upon confirmation of the local competition authorities’ agreement.
